Stay safe while you're digging in your yard, and know your responsibility for maintaining your gas lines.
Natural Gas: If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, have carbon monoxide symptoms or have some other gas emergency situation, go outside and call 911 and then our emergency number 1-800-634-3524.
Electric: For any electric emergency, including a downed power line, power outage or other electric-related situation, please call 1-800-464-7726.
Your service line (often referred to as a weatherhead) is part of your home. If this or other components that are your property are damaged, you may have a responsibility to hire an outside electrician to make the necessary repairs before electricity can be restored.
Also called a weathercap, service head or service entrance cap, is a weatherproof entry point for above-ground electrical wiring or telephone lines into a home or business. It typically tops a pipe-like conduit, and is shaped like a hood, with the face pointing down. The pipe and wires inside the pipe belong to the customer and are their responsibility.
The protective case around the meter, not the meter itself. Depending on the county/city rules identified in various communities, an inspection may be necessary before the service can be reconnected. Service will remain disconnected until the damage is repaired, for your safety and the safety of the electrician. Once the necessary repairs and/or inspections are received, call us at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) to schedule a reconnection. We will make every effort to restore power as soon as possible.
We’re responsible for overhead electric lines running from a utility pole and entering your home or businesses’ service line/ weatherhead.
NIPSCO is responsible for the meter itself, while the customer has responsibility for the meter box/base.
