Things to know
- You must be a NIPSCO residential electric customer with active service
- Appliances must be picked up at the NIPSCO service address
- You must own the appliance
- An adult (18 years or older) must be available at the time of pick-up
- There is a limit of two (2) large appliances (refrigerators and freezers) and two (2) small appliances (window/room air conditioner or dehumidifier) per household, per year
- Window/room air conditioner units/dehumidifiers are only eligible for pick-up and incentive with a refrigerator/freezer pick-up
- Refrigerators and freezers must be 10-30 cubic feet and be plugged in, working/cooling empty and disconnected from any water lines at the time of pick-up
- There are no size requirements for room air conditioners or dehumidifiers, but they must be removed from the wall or window,** unplugged and placed near an outlet so the driver can confirm the unit is in working condition at the time of pick-up.
- The old appliance will be delivered to a safe recycling facility
- In rare instances, older units that use sulfur dioxide (SO2) as a refrigerant are not eligible for recycling, and we can only determine if your appliance contains SO2 upon visual inspection
For any questions about this program, please call 1-800-721-7385 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT.
Responsible Appliance Disposal***
NIPSCO is a participating partner of the Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) Program, a voluntary partnership that works with utilities, retailers, manufacturers, states, affiliates and others to dispose of old refrigerated appliances using the best environmental practices available - going beyond federal requirements to protect Earth’s climate and ozone layer.

Units Processed
Cumulative Units Processed by NIPSCO
NIPSCO first joined the RAD program in 2011. Since then, NIPSCO has collected and processed a total of 23,771 refrigerant-containing appliances using best environmental practices. As a result, NIPSCO has successfully reduced emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases as well as reduced energy consumption, increased the recycling of durable materials, and ensured the proper handling of hazardous substances.
Climate Benefits
Cumulative Climate Benefits for NIPSCO
Since 2011, NIPSCO achieved a reduction of 161,967 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equal to:
Greenhouse gas emissions from 36,119 passenger vehicles driven for one year. (-or-)
Carbon dioxide emissions from 24,408 homes' energy use for one year. (-or-)
Carbon dioxide emissions avoided from 6,138,547 incandescent lamps switched to LEDs.
Of these emissions reduced, 10.9% can be attributed to reclaiming or destroying refrigerants, 12.5% to reclaiming or destroying foam-blowing agents, 2.3% to recycling durable materials (which avoids the need to produce virgin materials), and 74.3% to removing old units from the grid.
Stratospheric Ozone Benefits
Cumulative Stratospheric Ozone Benefits for NIPSCO
Since 2011, NIPSCO avoided the release of 5,602 ODP-weighted kg of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) which otherwise would have contributed to stratospheric ozone depletion. Ozone depletion causes increased amounts of UV radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. Overexposure to UV radiation can cause a range of health effects, including skin cancer (melanoma and non melanoma), premature aging of the skin and other skin problems, cataracts and other eye damage, and suppression of the immune system.
Of the ODS emissions avoided, 27% can be attributed to reclaiming or destroying refrigerants and 73% to reclaiming or destroying foam-blowing agents.
Energy Savings
Cumulative Energy Savings for NIPSCO
RAD’s utility partners are committed to ensuring that old, inefficient appliances being disposed of by one household do not get reused by other households. The permanent retirement of these appliances translates into both energy and consumer cost savings. Since 2011, NIPSCO reduced energy use by 168,054,944 kWh, which is estimated to have saved customers $16,864,705 on electricity bills.
Recycling Statistics
Cumulative Recycling Statistics for NIPSCO
Since 2011, NIPSCO further protected the environment by keeping recyclable materials out of landfills and ensuring the proper handling of hazardous waste, as shown below.
Materials prevented from going to a landfill:
- 3,153,870 lbs. of ferrous metals (e.g., steel)
- 168,809 lbs. of non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper)
- 392,862 lbs. of plastic
- 97,390 lbs. of glass
Hazardous materials handled properly:
- 1,574 gallons of used oil
- 39 PCB-containing capacitors
- 1,422 mercury-containing capacitor(s)
If released into the environment, used oil can leak into groundwater and major waterways and pollute drinking water sources. In addition to used oil, appliances may contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals—namely PCBs from capacitors and mercury from thermostatic switches. PCBs are regulated by EPA as toxic substances; they may cause cancer and liver damage and can have negative impacts on the neurological development of children, the human reproductive system, the immune system, and the endocrine system. Mercury is toxic and causes a variety of adverse health effects, including tremors, headaches, respiratory failure, reproductive and developmental abnormalities, and potentially, cancers.
