Residential Customers

The NIPSCO Choice Program presents an opportunity for customers to save money on the gas supply charge portion of their bill.

As of June 2008, there are 73,066 residential customers participating in the NIPSCO Choice program.

  1. What is NIPSCO Choice?

    NIPSCO Choice gives residential customers the ability to choose a natural gas supplier, other than NIPSCO or to stay with their existing NIPSCO service

  2. What is the advantage for customers?

    Choice can increase competition in the energy market, bringing more choices and lower prices for consumers by giving them the opportunity to comparison shop for competitively priced natural gas products and services.

  3. Where will NIPSCO Choice take place?

    All residential customers throughout NIPSCO's entire service area can qualify to choose their natural gas supplier with NIPSCO Choice.

  4. Who can take advantage of NIPSCO Choice?

    Residential Customers throughout NIPSCO's entire service area. Customers must be in "Good Credit Standing" to be eligible. This is defined as a customer account that is not in arrears for more than 30 days.

  5. How will NIPSCO Choice affect your gas bill?

    NIPSCO Choice suppliers will be responsible for a portion of the transportation of natural gas to NIPSCO's delivery system and all associated charges. Currently NIPSCO contracts with other pipelines to transport natural gas to its delivery system. These transportation fees will now be included in the supplier's price to its customers and no longer part of NIPSCO's delivery charge.

    NIPSCO will continue to deliver the gas to your home, provide 24-hour customer service and emergency response. This change will give suppliers the opportunity to offer their customers more competitive prices and potentially more savings.

    The NIPSCO Choice Program presents an opportunity for customers to possibly save money on the gas supply portion of their gas bill.

  6. Why is NIPSCO offering this program?

    Customers have asked for the ability to choose their natural gas supplier, the opportunity to save on their natural gas bills, new and enhanced services and pricing options.

  7. How does NIPSCO Choice work?

    Customers have the opportunity to purchase their natural gas from a supplier other than NIPSCO. It's as easy as 1,2,3.

    1. Investigate each qualified supplier by getting information about their services, pricing and contract options. Contact each one to discuss options.

    2. Once you select a qualified supplier, simply contact them and follow their sign-up procedure. You will need your NIPSCO account number and meter number from your NIPSCO bill. If you decide to stay with NIPSCO to supply your gas, there is no need to contact us.

    3. The qualified supplier that you choose will notify NIPSCO. The supplier's charges will appear as a separate line item on your NIPSCO bill. NIPSCO will continue to bill you for the gas delivery service.

    Only gas suppliers that are financially stable and reliable can participate as qualified suppliers in the Choice program. These qualified gas suppliers will provide customers with new pricing options and service alternatives.

    When you choose a natural gas supplier other than NIPSCO, we will continue to deliver your gas supply safely and reliably. NIPSCO will also continue to provide:

    • Emergency gas response

    • 24 hour, toll-free customer service

    • Metering and billing

    • Design, installation and maintenance of NIPSCO's pipeline system

  8. Remember to ask these important questions


    1. Does the natural gas price include all taxes and fees?

    2. How are the prices adjusted during term of contract? Monthly, quarterly, or fixed.

    3. What are the terms of the contract? Price? Length of contract? Payment terms? Cancellation penalties?

    Remember staying with NIPSCO is also a Choice. If you decide not to switch, you don't need to do anything.

  9. What if you change your mind later?

    You should talk with the supplier you choose about how they handle cancellations to make sure you know your options.

  10. How can you get more information?

    The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) welcomes calls about NIPSCO Choice at 1-888-441-2494. You also may visit the agency's home page on the Internet at www.state.in.us/oucc. The OUCC is the state agency that represents the interests of Indiana consumers in matters related to the provisions of utility services.
